The San Leandro Dojo is an affiliate of Shotokan Karate of America ("SKA"), the oldest karate educational institution in the country, and a national non-profit organization. We strive to improve ourselves, in a spirit of humility, through our practice, and endeavour to perpetuate our art. People of any level of experience, from new to advanced, are welcome to come train with us. All instructors are black-belts certified by Ohshima-Sensei. Karate practice promotes mental and physical health, improving one's self-confidence, balance, connection and strength. Our members are artists, scientists, teachers, doctors, parents, all making an effort to express themselves and improve their world. We welcome you to join us.

NOTE: Because SKA is a non-profit organization, we charge far less than the more commercial dojos out there. There are no fees for belt tests, no fees to train at our sister dojos throughout the country and around the world, and traditional, honest instruction through practicioners who carry a passion for karate-do and a desire to share this passion with those who wish to learn. Don't let the affordability fool you; this is martial arts training at a quality that is not reflected in the price.

Betsy Marvit has studied karate-do in the United States, Japan (Waseda), and France. She started her training under Ohshima-Shotokan's shihan, Ohshima Sensei, at Caltech in 1989, where she was dojo captain. After moving to the Bay Area in 1995, she continued her karate studies under the late Daniel Chemla until 2004. She now trains under Jim Sagawa.

Jeremy Murphy began his training under Samir Abboud at CSULB in 1999. He continued his studies in 2004 under Randy McClure and Dusty DuPree. Jeremy broadened his understanding and effectiveness through training under Cung Le.

Andrae Miller started his training in 1997 at CSULB under Samir Abboud. By 1998, he was concurrently training at Garden Grove Dojo.


All three instructors have been selected from fighters across the nation to represent the United States at Ohshima Shotokan's International tournament in Israel this summer.
